May 25, 2008, 7 p.m.
Spoleto Festival
Conceptualized by Ernesto Pujol with Valarie Samulski and Denzel Williams
Note: Denzel Williams is from Djole Children's West African Dance and Drumming Company
A one night only event inaugurating the Memminger Memorial Garden. Inspired by the low country tidal landscape and the Flower Women of Charleston, this performance combines elements of baptismal ritual and manual labor to the sound of a drum. A man and a woman dressed in white appear at the back of the garden and proceed to silently wash its shell and recycled brown glass porous flooring downhill using a sweet grass clump from the Philips Community, and three French buckets filled with waters drawn from the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, and the Atlantic Ocean. A young drummer in black sits behind the closed garden gates marking their walk with a repetitive African beat, while the public witnesses through the fence. The performance ends humbly like an ephemeral vision, and the audience is invited to enter the space.
Approximately 30 minutes. Free admission.
